Know Thine Own Self

When I was in the 4th grade I played the violin in our class orchestra.  While I enjoyed learning music and making music, physically it was grueling.  I do not recall complaining, at least not outwardly, and asking to change instruments was not even an option in my mind, but at the end of each class and each lesson I could be certain that the inside of my right (affected side) thumb would be red and bruised and hurt a…

I’d likely appear friendlier, if…

A few times over the years, after I’ve gotten to know a person and would consider them a good friend, they have mustered up the courage to tell me that upon our first meeting, I intimidated them and seemed standoffish.  The first time someone told me this I was completely shocked because I remembered our first meeting and I thought I was rather outgoing, for me.  I made intentional efforts to talk when my norm would be to keep to…

So I posted last week  about checking out a local CrossFit class.  Monday was the day that I would brave the doors of the gym and see what it had in store for me.  Class starts at 5:15am and I needed to be there 10 minutes early as it would be my first class, just so I had a heads up on all that would take place. 5:15 is early, but I’ve been waking up at that time anyway to…

What you don’t know can hurt you…and them

When it comes to raising kids, what you don’t know can hurt you…and them.  I see it with my own children.  When I fail to connect with their hearts and seek to understand what they are thinking and how they are thinking and why they are thinking in that way, I fail to fully understand them as people and our relationship suffers to some degree. Little by little, there is a separation. Little by little I lose their hearts and…

A Glutton For Punishment

Last week I wrote about my favorite subset of people, as I search out the best way to prepare for an upcoming MudRun.  I have 2 1/2 months until the race so any interest I have in a gym is short term.  If I join anywhere, I will likely do a single month to give me a bit of a boost in my training, but with 4 kids, any long-term commitment to working out at a gym is not very…
